AbsoAccording to ACOG, the following conditions are contraindicated for aerobic exercise during pregnancy: - Preterm rupture of membranes - Preterm labor during the prior or current pregnancy - Persistent second and third semester bleeding - Pregnancy induced hypertension - Haemodynamically significant heart disease - Incompetent cervix - Multiple gestation at risk for premature labor - Restrictive lung disease - Placenta praevia after 26 weeks of gestation Other conditions should be carefully evaluated by your doctor to determine your ability to exercise. These include: - Diabetes - High blood pressure - Anemia or other blood disorders - Extreme underweight or obesity - Extremely sedentary lifestyle - Thyroid disease - History of precipitous labor - Vascular disease - Irregular heart rythyms - Pulmonary disease - Intrauterine growth restriction in current pregnancy - Orthopaedic limitations - Poorly controlled seizure disorder - Heavy smoking Finally, the following are warning signs for pregnant women to stop exercising and consult one's physician: - Vaginal bleeding - Excessive nausea - Faintness or dizziness - Amniotic fluid leakage - Abdominal pain - Sudden swelling of the hands, ankles or face - Persistent severe headaches or visual disturbances - Phlebitis, the sudden swelling, pain and redness in the calf of one leg - Excessinve fatigue, palpitiations or chest pain - Decreased fetal activity - Elevation of pulse rate or blood pressure that persists after exercise - Extremes in temperature, either hot, cold or clammy - Unusual breathlessness - Significant muscle weakness - Unusual back pain - Significant muscle weakness - Hip or pubic pain - Unusual difficulties in walking - Preterm labor | |
